Winter in El Cerrito (2021)

While painting this series, I worked as a domestic violence counselor. When I began painting, we were months into the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. As we were required to shelter in place, people surviving abuse at home were confined, trapped. My day-to-day involved hearing the most intimate, tragic, courageous moments of people’s lives. Most of this work I did while sheltering inside my own home.  After work, I took long walks with my painting kit and wondered about the complexity contained within each of the homes I'd pass.

All pieces are watercolor and ink.

My right to be me is tied with a thousand threads to your right to be you.
